International Symposium on Balkan History Studies Committee (UBTAK), is an academic organization whose members are national and international faculty members, researchers and executives of the organization and whose mission is academic studies on Balkan history. The purpose of UBTAK is to research the Ottoman period which constitutes an important part of the Balkan history; to encourage national and international historians and researchers to use Ottoman sources; to introduce the Ottoman legacy; to determine the common aspects among Balkan people and thus to reestablish the Ottoman Peace (PaxOttomana). With this purpose, UBTAK makes academic works such as international symposiums, books and journals. The first symposium by UBTAK entitled“First International Balkan History Researches Symposium (UBTAS): methodological approaches” was held in Balıkesir University between the dates of 26-28 April 2013 (http://balkansemp2013.balikesir.edu.tr/). This symposium was a collaborative work of UBTAK, Balıkesir University, İstanbul University Eurasian Institute and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The purpose of the symposium was to encourage the use of Ottoman sources left out in Balkan history studies by national and international academics and to draw the attention on the shortcoming in this subject. 23 academics from the USA, Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Montenegro, Kosovo, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Greece and 34 academics and organization executives participated in the symposium. The papers presented by Libra Kitap http://www.librakitap.com.tr/content/view/410/219/)

The second symposium by UBTAK took place in Montenegro between 1-4 May 2014 with the title “The Ottoman Legacy in the Balkans and the Ottoman Tax Registers” (http://ubt.mehmetakif.edu.tr). In line with the above mentioned purposes, we aim to increase academic studies on  Ottoman period Balkan history, to bring academics working on Ottoman period Balkan history together, to develop cultural exchange between Balkan countries, to present the significance of Ottoman archives for Balkan history, to develop relations between Turkey and Balkan countries and to develop cooperation between organizations in Turkey and Balkan countries by organizing a symposium in a different Balkan country each year.
